And yeah, going from 60Hz to 144Hz felt like putting on glasses for the first time. But here's the thing nobody talks about in those monitor review videos — if your controller is running on Bluetooth, you might be giving back every millisecond you just gained.

Latency is a chain. Every link matters. And for a lot of gamers, the weakest link isn't the display — it's the thing in their hands.

What Latency Actually Means (and Why It Stacks)

Input latency is the gap between you pressing a button and that action showing up on screen. Simple enough. But what most people don't realize is that latency doesn't come from one place — it's the sum of everything in your signal chain: your controller, the connection type, your console or PC's processing time, your GPU render time, and finally your monitor.

Monitor manufacturers have done a great job marketing refresh rate as the end-all solution. And to be fair, display latency is real and worth addressing. But shaving 2ms off your monitor's response time while your Bluetooth controller is adding 20–50ms to every input is like putting racing tires on a car with a broken transmission.

Bluetooth Is Not Your Friend in a Firefight

The problem with Bluetooth isn't just raw latency. It's inconsistent latency. If you're gaming on PC and you're using a controller over Bluetooth, this is worth testing yourself. Tools like NVIDIA's FrameView or open-source input latency analyzers can give you a rough picture of what's happening under the hood.

Proprietary 2.4GHz: The Sweet Spot Most Gamers Sleep On

Here's where things get interesting. Over the last few years, controller manufacturers have invested heavily in proprietary wireless protocols that essentially close the gap between wireless and wired. Xbox's Wireless protocol, Sony's implementation in the DualSense, and third-party options like the PowerA MOGA XP-Ultra on Logitech's Lightspeed platform have gotten genuinely competitive.

That's within the margin of human perception. In blind tests, most players cannot reliably tell the difference between a 1ms wired connection and a 3ms proprietary wireless one.

For most gamers, even competitive ones, proprietary wireless is effectively as good as wired. The catch? You're locked into that ecosystem. The dongle only works with that controller. Lose it, and you're back to Bluetooth or hunting down a replacement.

When Wired Still Wins

For tournament play and the most latency-sensitive genres — fighting games, tactical shooters, rhythm games — wired is still the call. Not because the difference is enormous, but because eliminating variables matters when every advantage counts.

Fighting game communities like Street Fighter and Tekken players have long favored wired connections for exactly this reason. When you're frame-counting and trying to land a 2-frame link consistently, even a 2ms variance can mess with your muscle memory. It's not just about average latency — it's about consistency.

Rhythm game players are arguably even more sensitive to this. If you've ever played Guitar Hero or Beat Saber and felt like your timing was slightly off despite hitting notes perfectly, your connection type is a legitimate suspect.

For shooters and real-time strategy games, the gap is smaller. A good proprietary wireless setup will serve you just fine at the highest levels of play.

Genre-by-Genre Breakdown: What Connection Should You Be Using?

Tactical Shooters (Valorant, CS2, CoD): Wired or proprietary 2.4GHz. Bluetooth is a handicap.

If you're already on a solid proprietary wireless setup, the jump from 3ms to 0.8ms isn't something your nervous system can capitalize on. Human reaction time floors out around 150–250ms depending on the stimulus. You're not going to feel 2ms.

Where it might matter is in the consistency of that signal. Newer implementations tend to handle RF interference better and maintain lower latency in crowded wireless environments — like a tournament venue or a shared apartment with seventeen smart devices fighting for bandwidth.

The Bottom Line

Your monitor's refresh rate matters. We're not here to tell you to return your 240Hz display. But if you haven't thought critically about your controller's connection type, you're optimizing the wrong end of the chain.

Drop Bluetooth for competitive play. Invest in a controller with a solid proprietary 2.4GHz implementation if you want wireless freedom without the performance tax. And if you're serious about climbing ranks in any precision-dependent genre, plug in a cable and remove the question entirely.
